December 19th, 2009
On December 19th, 2009, a fateful tragedy struck Malawi as an earthquake measuring 6.2 magnitude occurred. This impact caused 3 deaths (2 adults and a child who died as bricks fell onto him) and an estimated number of 300 people were injured. 81 people were admitted to a district hospital. Not only that, several buildings collapsed, and an unbelievable number of houses has been destroyed. 200,000 people were urged to evacuate earthquake-prone Great Rift Valley. Malawi is located on a tectonic plate (Victoria Plate) which is strained and moved.
Reflections: If only there is an ACCURATE device that could actually ACCURATELY predict an earthquake a few days/ weeks earlier. Then the government would have been able to evacuate the whole location that is going to be affected by an earthquake. It is no use to predict an earthquake so early that people lose their trust in that device and actually went back to the area that is going to be affected by an earthquake, and thus, predictably, they die. (Splat.) Accuracy is indeed a very important thing...
